Unbelievably, Ryder is alive, kicking and brilliantly acting the part of a grouchy old man. He still has some bad days health wise but manages to recover. When he is sick, he lies in the bathtub so we refer to it as the hospital. He still has his beautiful coat and moves spryly and loves getting new toys.

This past year, he has used his nursing skills to take care of me. I am a cancer patient now and he is there to console me when I'm having a down day. He took excellent care of his first mommy too.

He continues to bully Shasta and anyone else who strikes his fancy, especially if he is not feeling well.

Award For Excellence

Ryder, in a true display of royal arrogance, gave me that "So?" look and went back to napping when I told him that he had won an award for excellence. When he was my mother-in-law's cat, we used two identical baskets to pack her meals in and then to pick up the dirty dishes. When she passed away, the baskets sat idle until one day we found Ryder in one of them. I added a piece of sheepskin and he claimed the basket as his. About four years later, I decided he need a new piece of sheepskin. He never got in the basket again. Don't mess with the castles of royalty.

Shasta's Recovery

My sidekick, Shasta, has recovered from some unknown malaise. The little orange spot on the ground is the fearless feline, Jack.

Here's the complete AP story:

WEST MILFORD, N.J. - A black bear picked the wrong yard for a jaunt, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree — twice.

Jack, a 15-pound orange and white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, often chasing small animals, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.

"We used to joke, 'Jack's on duty,' never knowing he'd go after a bear," owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday's editions.

Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack's accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey property on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.

After about 15 minutes, the bear descended and tried to run away, but Jack chased it up another tree.
Dickey, who feared for her cat, then called Jack home and the bear scurried back to the woods.
"He doesn't want anybody in his yard," Dickey said.

Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state's most
bear-populated areas.

Invisible Cat

My sidekick, Shasta, loves to play Hide and Seek. He arrived shortly before Christmas to brighten the life of a neighbor and to steal the hearts of everyone who meets him. He had spent many long months at a local shelter but had obviously been well-loved and well-trained by his previous owner.

We have always separated our cats from visiting dogs by use of a gate in the hall. During one of Brody's first visits, the resident royal cat, Ryder, decided the gate was not necessary when Brody came so he promptly crawled under it. We haven't used the gate since and peace reigns.

Buddies

I would love to recapture the child-like ability of intensely studying others and trying out their habits to better understand what they are about---like this child is doing.

Cat T-Shirts

I found this great web site for all you fellow feline lovers. They say cats lick themselves clean. They say cats have a special enzyme of some sort in their saliva that works like new, improved Wisk - dislodging the dirt where it hides and whisking it away.

I've spent most of my life believing this folklore. Like most blind believers, I've been able to discount all the facts to the contrary - the kitty odors that lurk in the corners of the garage and dirt smudges that cling to the throw rug by the fireplace.

The time comes, however, when a person must face reality; when he must look squarely in the face of massive public sentiment to the contrary and announce: "This cat smells like a port-a-potty on a hot day in Juarez."

When that day arrives at your house, as it has in mine, I have some advice you might consider as you place your feline friend under you arm and head for the bathtub:

Know that although the cat has the advantages of quickness and utter disregard for human life, you have the advantage of strength. Capitalize on that advantage by selecting the battlefield. Don't try to bathe him in an open area where he can force you to chase him. Pick a very small bathroom. If your bathroom is more than four feet square, I recommend that you get in the tub with the cat and close the sliding-glass doors as if you were about to take a shower (a simple shower curtain will not do. A berserk cat can shred a three-ply rubber shower curtain quicker than a politician can shift positions).

Know that a cat has claws and will not hesitate to remove all the skin from your body. Your advantage here is that you are smart and know how to dress to protect yourself. I recommend canvas overalls tucked into high-top construction boots, a pair of steel-mesh gloves, an army helmet, a hockey face mask and a long-sleeve flak jacket.

Prepare everything in advance. There is no time to go out for a towel when you have a cat digging a hole in your flak jacket. Draw the water. Make sure the bottle of kitty shampoo is inside the glass enclosure. Make sure the towel can be reached, even if you are lying on your back in the water.

Use the element of surprise. Pick up your cat nonchalantly, as if to simply carry him to his supper dish (cats will not usually notice your strange attire. They have little or no interest in fashion as a rule. If he does notice your garb, calmly explain that you are taking part in a product- testing experiment for J.C. Penney).

Once you are inside the bathroom, speed is essential to your survival. In a single liquid motion, shut the bathroom door, step into the tub enclosure, slide the glass door shut, dip the cat in the water and squirt him with shampoo. You have begun one of the wildest 45 seconds of your life. Cats have no handles.

Add the fact that he now has soapy fur, and the problem is radically compounded. Do not expect to hold on to him for more that two or three seconds at a time. When you have him, however, you must remember to give him another squirt of shampoo and rub like crazy. He'll then spring free and fall back into the water, thereby rinsing himself off (the national record is - for cats - three latherings, so don't expect too much).

Next, the cat must be dried. Novice cat bathers always assume this part will be the most difficult, for humans generally are worn out at this point and the cat is just getting really determined. In fact, the drying is simple compared to what you have just been through. That's because by now the cat is semi-permanently affixed to your right leg. You simply pop the drain plug with your foot, reach for your towel and wait (occasionally, however, the cat will end up clinging to the top of your army helmet. If this happens, the best thing you can do is to shake him loose and to encourage him toward your leg). After all the water is drained from the tub, it is a simple matter to just reach down and dry the cat.

Do NOT try to use a blow dryer. You might as well use a vacuum cleaner.
In a few days the cat will relax enough to be removed from your leg. He will usually have nothing to say for about three weeks and will spend a lot of time sitting with his back to you. He might even become psycho-ceramic and develop the fixed stare of a plaster figurine.
You will be tempted to assume he is angry. This isn't usually the case. As a rule he is simply plotting ways to get through your defenses and injure you for life the next time you decide to give him a bath. But, at least now he smells a lot better.

- By Bud Herron

Emily, The Stowaway, Returns Home

Emily may be just a year old but her wanderlust life has lead to experiences the rest of us only dream about. I found the web site of Dominique and his flying household cats. If you will be visiting Key West in the near future, you can see their show at sunset each day.

Here's what the Boston Globe wrote about the show:

The "lions," of course, are his tiny domestic cats, with names like Sara, Sharky, and Piggy. Together·, Dominique and his kitties offer a unique show that's as sensational as it is silly. Sometimes the cats charge out of their cages, then leap up to Dominque's tall circus stands, or onto the Frenchman himself. Sometimes they execute jumps, skips, and turns, or leap through flaming hoops, eliciting ooohs and aaahs from the packed circle of onlookers. Sometimes the cats do absolutely nothing at all. In which case, Dominique, a well-seasoned ham with a flair for theatrics, performs figurative headstands while waiting for them to do their stuff.

How to Give a Pill to a Cat

You may be more successful than I have ever been at medicating a cat. The following instructions are part of the public domain, as far as I know.

1. Pick cat up and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.
3. Retrieve cat from bedroom, and throw soggy pill away.
4. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.
5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse from garden.
6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.
7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered Doulton figurines from hearth and set to one side for gluing later.
8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.
Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.
9. Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with elastic band.
10. Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Throw tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.
11. Call fire department to retrieve cat from tree across the road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil-wrap.
12. Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed, force cat's mouth open with small wrench. Push pill into mouth followed by large piece of filet mignon. Hold head vertically and pour ½ pint of water down throat to wash pill down.
13. Get spouse to drive you to the emergency room, sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call furniture store on way home to order new table.

Everybody Wins

It is estimated that 50,000 animals were left behind in New Orleans after the recent hurricanes and animal shelters all along the Gulf Coast have more pets than they can care for. She disappeared about a month ago and turned up in Nancy, France, near the German border. Apparently, Emily visited a paper warehouse near her owners' home and ended up in a cargo container headed for France, first by ship and then by truck.

When workers for the French lamination company found her in the container, she was wearing tags that included the name of Emily's vet. They called the vet and he contacted Emily's owners. Now they have to figure out how to get her home.

One of our cat's disappeared a few years ago. Her name is Shasta with no royal title. Shasta came into our lives a few months after we lost another cat. Even though she was about a year old then, she was a very confused cat and remains so today. As I wrote on my other blog:

Not long after getting our white cat, Shasta, I came up with the theory that white cats are the equivalent of blondes. Just as the blonde who didn't make ice cubes because she didn't have the recipe, Shasta struggles through life without the benefit of a User's Guide. She tries to bury her food and water and never buries you-know-what. She has a hard time making decisions. Every day, it takes several tries of peering out the door before she decides to go out. But in spite of her difficulties, she is a devoted sidekick and I love her dearly.

The World's Ugliest Cat?

This is a photo I found on a website called College Humor.com. He is a black and white cat about eleven years old and lives with us.

Ryder originally was a dog substitute for my mother-in-law. He decided she needed a nurse more than a dog and took over that duty for the last couple of years of her life. Walking was difficult for her so Ryder would walk in front of her, constantly looking over his shoulder and adjusting his pace for her. She couldn't hear well so if the doorbell or phone rang, he would run to the location and wait for her to come.

My mother-in-law couldn't decide on a name for him. She toyed with the idea of "Nickels" or "Baby" but neither felt just right to her. His arrival coincided with golf's Ryder Cup tournament in Rochester that year. So Ryder it was. And is.

After her passing, Ryder came to live with us. We had lived next door and were in and out all the time so he knew us well. Before long, he became my husband's nurse and was right at home.

He is unashamed of his menial occupation with nursing but also lets us know (frequently) that he is of royal blood and must be treated accordingly; thus, the full title Sir Ryder of Cupp.
